DESCRIPTION
This 360° star trail panorama was captured by Alex in the Atacama Desert, Chile, at 4,447 meters above sea level, during a –8.1°C night after seven continuous hours of exposure. The final image is composed of four frames for the full 360°, plus one self-portrait illuminated under the stars, shot with a Sony A7SIII and a 14mm f/1.8 lens at ISO 1000, f/4.
The location, La Pacana, lies deep in the Atacama Desert, one of the driest and most remote regions on Earth. Reaching it required hours of off-road driving through rock-strewn valleys carved by relentless wind. Alex and his team spent two nights there, fighting gusts over 80 km/h that never ceased. The conditions were brutal, yet the landscape felt otherworldly, filled with eroded monoliths and glowing stone formations.
Alex built a small base camp protected by rocks and ropes, then began scouting. Even short walks were exhausting at that altitude, where every breath feels thin. He started shooting after sunset, tracking the slow rotation of the planet through thousands of exposures. At 4 a.m., under the rising moon, he left his tent to capture the illuminated foreground, revealing the silver tones of the wind-shaped desert.
It was one of the most intense nights of his life. Alone, guided only by moonlight, surrounded by silence and glowing rocks, Alex experienced the deep sense of isolation that defines his work. When the final frame was complete, he laughed and cried at once, overwhelmed by the scale of what he had just witnessed.
This photograph marks a new chapter in his journey with star trail panoramas, a project he began in 2019 and continues to refine. Over 6,000 images were taken during that expedition, but this one, the first of the series, remains the most meaningful, a pure fusion of endurance, emotion, and the movement of our planet through space.
