DESCRIPTION
This 360° panorama was captured by Alex in Sardinia, Italy, during a solo expedition to the island’s southern coast. The image reveals, from left to right, the city lights of Chia, the reddish glow of Mars, Saturn near the Milky Way core, bright Jupiter just beyond it, and the Ursa Major above the Capo Malfatano lighthouse.
Sardinia is one of Italy’s most remarkable regions, a place of turquoise seas, granite cliffs, and untouched wilderness. Alex chose the south for its darker skies and raw atmosphere, setting up camp near Cala Cipolla, a remote cove that became the stage for an unforgettable night under the stars.
Technically, this photograph was one of his most challenging. Having just learned to use an astrotracker, Alex decided to push further and create a complete 360° panorama. The process took forty minutes to capture the sky alone, followed by several additional exposures for the foreground. Despite the complexity, the result exceeded expectations.
Looking back, Alex now focuses less on technical perfection and more on the experience itself, yet this image remains a milestone. It earned several international awards and marked a key step in his evolution as a panoramic night photographer.
