This worldwide awarded 360° panorama was captured by Alex on August 10, 2020, from the summit of Mount Paterno at 2,746 meters, facing the Tre Cime di Lavaredo under the light of the Moon and Jupiter. The scene also reveals a rare Brocken Spectre on the right, the Ursa Major above the cross, and the headlights of climbers glowing faintly on the highest peak. The image is composed of six shots with 60° rotations, each bracketed into three exposures to balance shadows and highlights, for a total of eighteen frames captured with a Canon 5D Mark IV and a Samyang 12mm f/2.8 fisheye lens.
This photograph was one of the most ambitious and demanding experiences of Alex’s career. Along with his friend William, he carried a full pack of supplies, climbing gear, a tent, and photo equipment along a steep via ferrata with vertical sections, all to realize a vision he had imagined for years: to capture the Tre Cime from an entirely new and extreme perspective.
The preparation took months, from testing equipment to studying weather models and route maps. On the day of the climb, conditions seemed ideal, but heavy fog covered the summit after four hours of ascent. The sunset was disappointing, yet as night fell, the atmosphere transformed.
Under the moonlight, the peaks began to glow, and as Alex composed his 360° panorama, he noticed something extraordinary appearing behind him — a perfect Brocken Spectre forming in the mist. In that moment, fatigue, risk, and planning gave way to pure awe.
This image remains one of Alex’s most iconic works, a fusion of adventure, precision, and the unpredictable beauty of high mountains at night.
