This 360° moonlight panorama was captured by Alex on July 30, 2020, from the summit of the Eggishorn at 2,934 meters, overlooking the Aletsch Glacier in Switzerland. Between the Moon and the cross stand Saturn and Jupiter, while above to the right shines the Ursa Major. The final image is a stitch of nine frames, each exposed for 15 seconds at ISO 2500, f/4, with a 14mm Sigma Art lens on a Sony A7S.
The Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps, was the first destination of Alex’s month-long scouting trip across Switzerland. Reaching this remote viewpoint meant planning his first high-altitude bivouac, sleeping directly on the rock with only a mat and sleeping bag, facing this immense river of ice.
As the sun set behind the central peaks, Alex waited for the moon to climb high enough to illuminate the glacier’s intricate web of crevasses. The silence was broken only by the sound of the ice shifting and cracking. When the landscape turned silver-blue under the moonlight, he began composing the full 360° panorama.
Alex has long been fascinated by moonlit scenes. After completing his journey through the darkest skies of the Atacama Desert years before, where he photographed the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, he found a new obsession in lunar light. Its metallic glow and calm intensity became a signature element of his work.
This photograph represents that evolution, the meeting point between technique, endurance, and emotion. Entirely lit by the moon, with no artificial light, it stands as one of Alex’s most meaningful 360° works, a tribute to the fragile and living beauty of the glaciers that inspired it.
